How We Treat Feline Bronchial Asthma

Did you know that feline bronchial asthma is a lot like human bronchial asthma? The symptoms of bronchial asthma in cats are very similar to that in humans, and it’s diagnosed in a very similar way. So when your cat has asthma, how do you treat it? At VCA-VRA, we have a very effective approach to treating feline bronchial asthma. So if you suspect your kitty is suffering from asthma, contact us today to learn more about our treatment.

How To Diagnose Feline Asthma?

Asthma is caused by constricted airways. Have you noticed your cat exerting a great deal of effort to exhale air?. If your cat appears to be using his or her abdomen to push air out, and their breaths in are shallow and rapid, these could be signs of feline asthma. Also, cats will attempt to breathe through their mouths in an effort to move the largest possible volume of air.
While these are all potential warning signs, the only true way to diagnose bronchial asthma is through variety of diagnostic tests that will rule out other, more serious diseases and illnesses. Blood work, including complete blood count and biochemical profile, is needed to rule out other systemic diseases including feline leukemia virus, feline immunodeficiency virus, and heartworm disease.
After eliminating other diseases, a chest x-ray can be done to fully confirm feline bronchial asthma.

How to Treat Feline Asthma?

The easiest way to treat feline bronchial asthma is through medication. These medications work to alleviate inflamed airways and halt excess mucus production. Many of these drugs are administered intravenously or subcutaneously (under the skin). Also, it’s important to eliminate underlying sources of allergy for your pet. You can do this by:
  • Using a minimally dusty cat litter
  • Avoiding aerosols and/or carpet cleaning products
  • Eliminating exposure to cigarette or cigar smoke
  • Minimizing exposure to wool blankets and/or carpeting
  • Keeping the environment comfortably cool
  • Minimizing stress
  • Using a HEPA filter in the home
